Rethinking Marketing for the Home Remodeler

In normal times (I don't know what normal times are, but we are definately not in normal now) -- it has been difficult to reach a homeowner just at the point they were thinking of remodeling their home.

New homebuyer marketing programs (life-event marketing programs) did not provide the right timing because most new homebuyers were spending money only on essentials for their home (furniture, accessories, cable, etc). Major additions, kitchen and bathroom renovations were on hold until sometime in the future when the homeowners felt less "house poor".

However, now with the economy on the skids and the real estate marketing floundering -- reaching a homeowner right before they move and/or right after they move are now windows of opportunity.

A recent August 24, 2008 article in the Boston Globe mentioned: “Most remodeling is done immediately before or after homes are sold, so a large chunk of work has disappeared with home sales so slow, said Kermit Baker, director of Remodeling Futures Program at Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies.”
 
When a slow real estate market is a buyer's market -- making your home the best in the neighborhood makes it easier to sell at the price you are looking for. Also in the inverse -- when making a home purchase -- buyers are getting great deals so they are ready to put additional funds into the house to make it the way they want to live in it. Both timeframes make it crucial for a home remodeler to reach the premover or postmover right before selling their home or right after purchasing their home.
